Letter to AHS Senior Parents
Dear Aubrey ISD families,
I’m so happy to announce that we will be holding our graduation ceremony for our seniors as planned on Wednesday, May 20th at 8 p.m. Instead of having the ceremony at the University of North Texas, we will be moving it to the Texas Motor Speedway along with other Denton County School districts.
I express my sincere appreciation to the Texas Motor Speedway for their willingness to host our ceremony and the ceremonies for all the Denton County School districts. Judge Andy Eads deserves our appreciation as he helped facilitate conversations with TMS officials. While everyone wishes we could have our traditional ceremony at the University of North Texas, I believe this will be a special event for our Seniors and am very grateful for the creativity shown by many people to make this ceremony a reality for our students and families.
Having this larger, outdoor venue will allow for us to comply with social distancing guidelines outlined by Denton County Health Services and Governor Abbott's Executive Order.
Aubrey High School will be publishing more detailed logistics regarding the graduation ceremony. There will be guidelines in order to ensure compliance with health directives. The audience for the graduation will attend a “drive-in movie style” ceremony. Audience members will remain in vehicles to watch the ceremony live while parked in the TMS infield. The ceremony will also be live-streamed so that family members who are in high-risk categories for contracting COVID-19, or who are currently quarantined, can remain at home and watch the ceremony.
TMS will project the commencement ceremony on its huge video board, named “Big Hoss”, to ensure that every graduate is seen by those in attendance, both in-person and at home. We are planning on having the graduates, wearing their caps and gowns in addition to masks, walk across a stage to receive their diploma. Aubrey ISD will provide masks for our graduates with our logo, Aubrey High School, and Class of 2020 embroidered into the cloth mask. Students will get to keep the masks as a keepsake. The diploma presentation will be hands-free and will follow social distancing guidelines. There will be pictures taken of the graduates and they will be able to remove their mask for that picture. Graduates will be staged for the graduation ceremony in chairs that will be set at least 6 feet apart.
Texas Motor Speedway, located at 3545 Lone Star Circle, is a NASCAR
speedway located in the northernmost portion of the city of Fort Worth but located in Denton County.
Mr. Gore, Aubrey High School principal, will send out more details as we get closer to the ceremony.
