General Questions
-
Why is Aubrey ISD opening campuses for face-to-face instruction during a pandemic?
On July 7, 2020 and updated on July 17, 2020, the Texas Education Agency provided guidance to all districts in Texas. In that guidance, districts were required to offer on campus instruction beginning with the first day of school in 2020-2021. TEA offered a phase-in option of four weeks for distance learning, and is being considered. All of this guidance is subject to change based on Governor Abbott’s future executive orders, recommendations from Denton County health officials, or other circumstances that emerge. Aubrey ISD has created this plan to be able to open campuses for the first day of school.
-
What are Aubrey ISD’s plans regarding prevention of COVID-19?
The specific plans the District has created to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 are posted on the website: aubreyisd.net/backtoschool The plans created are based on the guidance issued on July 7, 2020 from TEA and guidelines from local, state and federal health agencies. This plan will be updated on a consistent basis with new guidance and input.
-
Could Aubrey ISD start the 2020-21 school year remotely?
As the health emergency continues to evolve, the District may move to a full distance learning model depending on the occurrence of illness due to COVID-19 in our area and guidance from our local health officials.
-
Will Remote Learners be able to check out a device from the school?
Yes.
Aubrey ISD remote learners can pick up technology devices on Wednesday, Aug 12 from 5-7 p.m. in front of school campuses. Students who are starting the school year as remote learners and need technology devices can pick them up at their campus on Aug. 12.
Families with children at multiple campuses can just go to one campus. Families who can't make this pick up time can call 940-668-1550 during the day to make alternative arrangements.
Please fill out the below forms. Forms will also be available at pick up.
-
How will Aubrey ISD respond if a confirmed COVID-19 case is identified regarding a student or staff member?
Detailed plans can be found in the Prevention/Response Protocol on the Aubrey ISD website at www.aubreyisd.net/backtoschool. The information below is an overview of the protocol Aubrey ISD will follow.
Individuals Confirmed, Suspected, or Exposed to COVID-19
Any individual who either: (a) are lab-confirmed to have COVID-19; or (b) experience the symptoms of COVID-19 must stay at home throughout the infection period, and cannot return to campus until the school system screens the individual to determine all of the following conditions for campus re-entry have been met:
-At least 24 hours have passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications); and
-the individual has improvement in symptoms; and
-at least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared
In the case of an individual who has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and who is not evaluated by a medical professional or tested for COVID-19, such individual is assumed to have COVID-19, and the individual may not return to the campus until the individual has completed the same three-step set of criteria above.
Below, please find flowcharts for ease of understanding steps that need to be taken when a staff member or student tests positive for COVID-19 or has COVID-19 symptoms.
Also, please find flowcharts for ease of understanding steps that need to be taken when a staff member or student is exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
***These flowcharts are subject to change based on Denton County Health Department guidance.***
(If you have trouble understanding the implications of these examples, please review the flowcharts below or contact your direct supervisor, campus principal, HR, or the superintendent’s office for a more thorough explanation.)
-
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
- Temperature of 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth;
- Sore throat;
- New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (or, for students with a chronic
- allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline);
- Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; or
- New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever.
-
Will the district shift from on-campus instruction and go fully remote as done the last nine weeks of the 2019-20 school year?
This might happen in a few different scenarios. Some examples are: a) If Governor Abbott issues an executive order that mandates remote learning for schools in our area or throughout the state. b) If the Denton County Health Department recommends or mandates we shift to remote learning, or c) if a school or the district begins to experience an increase in illness related to COVID-19 that is widespread, the district may close for a certain period of time to disinfect campuses. The shutdown could be by campus or district wide. If this happens, Aubrey ISD will provide remote learning to all students affected.
-
Will students and staff be required to wear face coverings or face shields?
As of July 7, Governor Abbott’s Executive Order GA-29 relating to the use of face coverings during the Covid-19 disaster is in effect and requires every person in Texas to “wear a face covering over the nose and mouth when inside a commercial entity or other building or space open to the public, or when in an outdoor public space, wherever it is not feasible to maintain six feet of social distancing from another person in the same household”.
Aubrey ISD will require students in grades 4 and above to wear them at all times that social distancing is not possible. Students in grades 3 and below will be required to wear face coverings in common areas and will be encouraged to wear them in class when social distancing is not possible. Other exceptions may apply.
All AISD employees are required to use their choice of either face covering or face shield anytime they are within six feet of students, visitors, or colleagues or anytime an order such as GA-29 is in effect. If an order such as GA-29 is not in effect and when standing more than six feet away from others (such as during a class lecture or while writing on a board), teachers and other AISD employees are not required to wear coverings or face shields. They may use a face covering or face shield provided by the district or may provide their own. Face coverings shall not have pictures, emblems, or writings that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene or that advertise or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance prohibited. Also, face coverings shall not create a disruption.
Visitors to campus will be asked to wear face coverings or face shields if they are unable to maintain a distance of six feet away from others during their visit or anytime a federal, state, or anytime an order such as GA-29 is in effect.
All students and staff are required to wear a face covering in common areas.
Aubrey ISD will provide each student with a gaiter and mask free of charge. Staff will also receive face coverings. If parents would like to order additional masks and gaiters, please fill out this form.
Masks and gaiters (youth and adult sizes) are $10. We need a minimum order of 100 before we can order. Orders will take 10 days.
-
Will remote learning be the same as it was the last nine weeks of school in 2019-20?
No. The distance learning program will have specific expectations for daily progress by the student. Grades will be taken following the Aubrey ISD grading guidelines for on campus learning. Grades will count for GPA and class rank at high school.
Fall 2020 Remote Instruction
Spring 2020 Emergency Remote Instruction
Grades will be issued for online learning in the same manner as face-to-face following our district grading guidelines.
Only four grades were required and those grades were based on general knowledge and skills.
Students will be expected to turn in all assignments and participate in any scheduled online meetings to be considered present.
Teachers accepted a variety of work samples to show mastery of TEKS. No attendance requirements expected.
HS Course grades will count toward GPA and class rank as defined in district policy and procedure.
Grades from the last nine weeks did not count toward GPA and class rank.
Assignments and assessments will be the same or similar to what would be expected in a face-to-face class.
Assignments and assessments were streamlined to deliver only the most essential content.
Google Classroom will be the delivery platform in grades 3-12 and SeeSaw will be the delivery platform in grades PK-2.
Teachers used a variety of platforms to deliver instruction
-
Can students move back and forth between remote learning and on campus learning?
Two weeks prior to the beginning of the school year, parents will be asked to commit their child(ren) to either on-campus learning or remote learning. Families with multiple children can make the choice per child. A commitment for a nine week grading period will be given for each student. If a family chooses remote and wants to begin on campus instruction, that will be available once the nine week grading period has been completed. The District will be asking for a new commitment two weeks prior to the end of the grading period. If a student who chooses on campus instruction becomes ill with COVID-19 or another longer term illness (defined as one that may last more than 24 hours) may begin dremote learning during their absence. Once the student has been cleared to return to school, the student will be able to continue on campus learning.
-
Is the Aubrey ISD remote learning plan a “synchronous” or “asynchronous” learning plan?
Aubrey ISD will be designing and implementing an “asynchronous” learning plan. Students who chose this option will be required to engage and make progress in their learning/assignments each day to receive credit for attendance. The 90% attendance rule is in effect for the 2020-2021 school year as established by TEA. If a student is ill, parents will need to contact the campus attendance office and submit doctor’s notes as normal.
-
Are students participating in Remote Instruction subject to the AISD Student Code of Conduct?
Yes.
-
What are the academic expectations of students participating in the Aubrey ISD distance learning program?
These can be found in the asynchronous learning plan at www.aubreyisd.net/backtoschool.
-
Will special education and 504 services be available for remote instruction academy students?
Yes. Please see the AISD Instructional Plan and contact your campus principal or assistant principal.
-
Can students in the distance learning plan participate in extracurricular activities such as UIL athletics or marching band?
Yes, but they must obtain their own transportation to and from practices.
-
Will all courses be available via remote learning that are available on campus?
Yes, all courses offered through Aubrey ISD will be available through remote learning either through our own curriculum or through online courseware purchased for distance learning. Dual credit courses taken through institutes of higher education and CTE courses taken through Denton ISD may require some face to face class time depending upon the course.
Classroom Questions
-
Are visitors allowed on campus?
We are asking that only essential visitors visit campus when necessary. If a parent wishes to have lunch with their child, we will expect the parent to check them out of school and take them to lunch then return the child to school for class.
-
How will lunch work for students?
The District is establishing a maximum number of students that can be accommodated in each cafeteria of our five campuses while maintaining separation. Each campus is evaluating alternative areas that lunch can take place. Each campus is creating the specific plan for lunches and will publish those before school begins.
-
Will elementary students have recess?
Yes. The three elementary schools are making plans for students on campus to engage in recess. The logistics may be different than the past, but students will have recess.
-
How will dropoff and pickup take place at each campus?
Each campus is developing their dropoff and pickup procedures to ensure appropriate social distancing. Those plans will be communicated before school starts.
-
How will bus transportation work?
Aubrey ISD will continue to provide transportation for students but recommend that bus service be reserved for those with no other transportation option. Social distancing on a school bus will be very difficult, but to reduce contact all students will have an assigned seat. Buses will be loaded back to front and unloaded front to back. The bus windows will be lowered to help with fresh air flow when the outside temperature will allow. Students in grades 4 and up are required to wear a face covering to ride the bus and are encouraged to social distance at bus stops and maintain six feet distance when loading and unloading.
-
Will students need to bring water bottles to school for themselves?
AISD students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles. Water fountain use will be limited.
-
Will students share school supplies or will they need to have their own in separate storage containers?
Students will not share school supplies. Campuses will communicate specifics regarding storage pouches/containers.
-
Will students at secondary schools be able to access lockers?
Students who need a locker will have a locker assigned to them. Each campus will work with students to reduce the numbers of students at lockers at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing.
-
What will my student’s classroom look like? Will they have dividers? Will they be able to interact with their peers?
Students will be able to interact with their peers in class. Aubrey ISD has ordered portable desk dividers that are a clear plastic to act as a “sneeze/cough” guard and allow students to interact and see one another while limiting exposure. Desks will be arranged in rows to facilitate social distancing to the greatest extent possible.
-
Is the Hybrid model (a day/b day) a consideration?
The hybrid model is not being considered for the 20-21 school year at this time. During a recent communication with TEA, the commissioner stated that the District could not mandate parents keep students at home on alternate days. In addition, he noted that it would be impossible to complete the required curriculum as it cuts instruction time extensively.
-
Will there be STAAR testing this school year?
At this time, TEA plans to administer all standardized tests for the 2020-2021 school year. The STAAR testing calendar has been updated and reflects testing dates during the 2020-21 school year. Aubrey ISD in partnership with other Denton County school districts and several Legislators has requested that STAAR be waived for this school year.
-
Does Aubrey ISD plan to change its truancy or attendance policies?
According to TEA guidance, truancy and attendance policies are required to continue and be in place, no matter the setting of the students. AISD will continue the current policies and is proud to offer a curriculum that will meet the needs of students whether they are on campus or online. If a student is ill, we request parents keep their child at home. Doctor’s notes are still being accepted to excuse absences and if a students is required to be quarantined due to COVID-19 exposure, those absences will be coded as such and excused.
UIL Activities Questions
-
Are there crowd restrictions for sporting events at Aubrey ISD?
Yes. Facilities may only be filled to 50% capacity. Certain rows and seats will be unavailable for seating. Other guidance will be provided as we get closer to the beginning of the school year.
-
Will UIL sports, fine arts, academic, and other competitions still take place?
Aubrey ISD is implementing the guidance given to us by the UIL. At this time, all UIL activities are scheduled to take place. The plan has a section for UIL activities that addresses athletics and marching band at this time. Future updates will be provided as guidance and decisions are made by the UIL and the District.
-
Are extracurricular activities being offered at Aubrey ISD?
Yes. Specific guidance pertaining to Covid-19 and related safety measures can be found in the Aubrey ISD UIL Activities Protocol.
-
Are face coverings required for attendees at sporting events at Aubrey ISD?
According to Governor Abbott’s Executive Order GA-29, face masks or face shields are required for individuals age 10 and up when in public. In accordance with advice from local health officials, Aubrey ISD interprets the mask requirement to apply only when individuals are standing or seated within six feet of non-household members.
