AMS Teacher and Students Nominated for National Awards
Aubrey Middle School 8th grade history teacher Wendy Hott was nominated for the 2018Smart/Maher Veterans of Foreign War National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. She was recognized at a morning assembly at AMS on Thursday, Dec. 13. Five eighth-grade students also received certificates for their winning essays.
Mrs. Hott was sponsored by the Hughes-Tune Post 1922 in Gainesville, Texas. Post 1922 representatives Dennis Kretzschmar, Melanie Kretzschmar and Steve Crawford presented a certificate to Mrs. Hott. The certificate recognized her for “her unique ability to bring history to life, while helping her students understand patriotism through both her curriculum and activities designed to reinforce and encourage citizenship.”
Mrs. Hott’s nomination will be submitted to district-level judging. Winners from district will be forwarded on to the state and national levels.
AMS 8th graders Lundyn Byrd, Hannah Smith, Hunter Whitley, Adelia Thompson and Kristin Martin were all recognized for the essays they wrote on “Why I Honor the American Flag.” The VFW Patriot’s Pen program is open to students in grades 6-8. All five student essays will move on to the district competition.
